The Best Buzzbait – My Top 7 – Creating The Most Buzz On The Water

March 31, 2019 By Wes Leave a Comment

best buzzbait

If you are on the internet searching for a good buzzbait chances are it is because you have heard that these baits catch big bass. And I will tell you that you are not mistaken.

They will catch fish and they will catch big ones too. Especially when you fish them at night.

However, I am not writing this post to convince you to throw a buzzbait, but rather to inform you about which one is the best one for your fishing needs.

At this point, you might be thinking, just how many buzzbaits can there to be to choose from? Well, let me tell you….there are a lot.

Until I started researching for this post, I never realized just how many different types of buzzbaits are on the market today.

No wonder so many people have asked me what is the best buzzbait?

(Learn more about the history of its here: Best Bass Lures Of All Time.)

Today, in this post I am going to try to answer that question. First I would like to highlight a few of the different varieties that are available and then talk about a few ideal situations of when to throw them. I hope you enjoy!

What is the best buzzbait?

Here is a quick preview of my favorites.

  • BOOYAH Pond Magic Buzz
  • Strike King Premier
  • MegaStrike Cavitron
  • BOOYAH Buzz
  • BOOYAH Counter Strike Buzz
  • Strike King Sugar
  • Strike King Tri-Wing Buzz

I once heard a fisherman say that a buzzbait does on the surface of the water, what a jig does on the bottom of the water.

Well, what do jigs do on the bottom of the water? They make noise.

That is exactly what the BOOYAH Pond Magic Buzz does. It makes noise.

The single blade while it does create commotion on the surface of the water it doesn’t create as much noise as other similar baits as we will see later. This makes it the ideal lure when you want to fish topwater, but you want a more subtle approach.

Also, because of the single blade design, it works really well in covering a lot of water and really drawing bass to come up and get it. Remember, big bass love buzzbaits. So when you are looking for that big bite, you can’t go wrong by choosing the BOOYAH Pond Magic Buzz .

What is better than a buzzbait with one blade? One with two blades.

Such as the one pictured above, it is the Strike King Premier Plus Buzzbait.

It is available in two different sizes: 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce. What makes this one different from the standard single blade is that two blades create a lot more commotion in the water. This works great in getting the bass’ attention and thus enhances your chances of getting more bites.

Another benefit to fishing with two blades over just one is that two blades are going to displace more water. Because of this, you can fish them much slower while still keeping them on the surface of the water. So I would highly recommend you pick up one of these and use it in those situations where you want to slow roll a buzzbait.

If you want to create even more commotion and noise you can push the blades together ever so slightly so that they blades click when they rotate. Extra noise, extra commotion, and hopefully more fish in the boat.

The next lure pictured above is the MegaStrike Cavitron Buzzbait. This is a 3/8 ounce single blade buzzbait.

The biggest difference you will notice is there are holes in the blade. These holes do two things to this bait that bass love.

First, similar to fishing a bait with two blades they allow you to fish the lure much more slowly. We all know that bass can’t resist a slow-moving buzzbait.

Second, the holes create more bubbles and create more of a trail in the water helping the bass track it down.

This is by far is one of the most popular lures among my readers and for good reason, it catches fish. So pick up a MegaStrike Cavitron and start catching fish.

See this lure in action in the following video:

Another unique buzzbait is the BOOYAH Buzz. It is available in three different sizes: 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 3/8 ounce.

As you can see it is a standard buzzbait with a single blade. However, you can also see a little metal flap near the blade. This is called a clacker.

This clacker is designed in a way so that when the lure is being retrieved it comes in contact with the blade and gives it a unique sound. This sound acts like a dinner bell to bass and entices them to come up and get it.

One thing I can say for sure is that this lure is not for the weak hearted. You will get some crazy blow ups on this lure. You best be ready!

As we know the big bass hide in cover.

However, when fishing with a buzzbait it may be difficult fishing in those areas. This is because the cover can cause the lure to sink. We know that the buzzbait is only effective if it remains on top of the water. If only there was a lure that was effective when fishing thick cover.

There is just the buzzbait for that purpose and it is the BOOYAH Counter Strike Buzz – Alpine – 1/2 oz.

This lure is available in three different sizes: 1/2 ounces, 1/4 ounce and 3/8 ounce. As you can see it has a single blade. Right behind the main blade is a smaller oddly shaped blade. This is called the counter-rotating blade.

The purpose is simple, it is there to make more noise and to keep the lure running on top of the water. The two key ingredients when fishing with a buzzbait.

I love what Strike King did with the Strike King Sugar Buzzbait.

As you can see they didn’t adjust the blade it still has only one hook. However, they changed the hook. How can you change the hook?

They made the hook a free-swinging hook. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but I love this feature and it really is something that no other company has done before.

I love this feature because the free-swimming hook allows the body to move much freely on the retrieval. This gives it more action and enhances the presentation. An added bonus is that it allows for better hookups.

You will definitely catch more fish and lose less with the Strike King Sugar Buzzbait.

The last (certainly not the least effective) to add to our list of the best buzzbait is theStrike King Tri-Wing Buzz King Bait (White, 0.3125-Ounce).

What I love about this lure is the unique blade. It has a Tri-Wing blade. I know that sounds like something that came out of Star Wars, but I guarantee you that you will love this blade. The uniquely shaped blades rotate in the shape of a diamond.

This motion along with the very distinct sound makes this buzzbait like no other. Also, because of the blade design it also displaces water nicely. This help to keep it on the surface of the water when it is being retrieved and it allows you to slow roll it.

Sometimes slow rolling it will give the bass that extra opportunity to come up and get it.

Try out the Strike King Tri-Wing Buzz today. I think you will love it.

Final Thoughts…

I know what you are thinking, “Wes you told us that you were going to help us choose the best buzzbait, but instead you gave us 7 options to choose from. We want to know which one is the best?”

The truth is to answer that question much depends on you as a fisherman and under what circumstances you will be fishing. Each lure that I mention is a good quality lure.  It will catch you fish.

Can I narrow it down to just one? No, unfortunately not. The reason is that one day the bass might like a lot of noise and the next they might be hitting the lure that makes no noise.

The important thing to keep in mind when choosing any fishing lure is to be adaptable.  Pay attention to what the bass are feeding on and try to mimic that. Also, pay attention to what is generating bites and don’t be afraid to change lures.

For example, if they want it loud, you better be changing to a louder buzzbait. If they want a topwater frog then you better be throwing the best topwater frog that you own. Remember, the most successful fishermen are the ones who learn to adapt.
