The first lure to add to our list of the best walleye ice fishing lures is the Rapala Jigging Shad Rap. Now we all know that the shad rap crankbait can catch walleye, the reason being is because of its ability to imitate baitfish so well. The same is true with the Jigging Shad Rap.
As you can see from this picture, this lure is basically a jig with a single hook in the front/back and a treble hook in the center. It is available in a number of different colors, but I like the perch color since walleye like feeding on perch.
Overall the design is quite simple, but don’t be deceived by the look of this lure. This lure will do some damage underwater. What really sets this jig apart from the many others on the market is the tail. This tail gives it that motion that walleye can’t resist. When given a sharp snap of the fishing point, this tail allows the lure to dart back and forth much like a baitfish.
Rapala has three really good walleye ice fishing lures in this category: the Rapala Jigging Rap, Rapala Snap Rap and the Rapala Jigging Shad Rap. The biggest difference between the three is the shape. The shad rap is designed for fish feeding on shad. So if you are in an area that the walleye are feeding on shad, throw on the shad rap and start bringing those fish in.
Oh! Did I mention you can use it in the regular season as well? You are not limited to walleye fishing with this lure through the ice, take this lure out in the open water and see if you can’t get some bites.
Lastly, you are not limited on only catching walleye, you can also catch perch, crappie or even trout on this lure.

Walleye react very well to lures that give off a lot of flash and vibration. So, what lures give off a great amount of vibration and flash? Spoons! Walleye love spoons. For that reason the next on our list of the best ice fishing lures for walleye is the Acme Kastmaster Spoon.
This particular spoon is made out of brass making it almost indestructible and designed to last many ice fishing seasons to come. When ice fishing for walleye I would recommend using a 1/4 ounce or a 1/2 ounce depending on what the fish want.
Another important thing to remember when fishing this spoon is to choose a color that is going to best match what the walleye are feeding on. If you aren’t initially getting any bites with this lure I would recommend changing colors before changing lures.
Lastly, this is another great lure that not only is effective in the cold winter months, but the warm summer months as well.
Another great ice fishing spoon for walleye is the Williams J50 1/4 oz Spoon. The reason we like this spoon is because of the colors. It is available in both silver and gold. Simple choices, but big results!
Sometimes when ice fishing for walleye we need to fish deep. You can imagine fishing in deep dirty waters with a couple of feet of ice sitting on top, how little light is actually getting to the bottom of the water where you spoon is going up and down. For that reason, we need a spoon that is going to flash on the smallest amount of light to generate a strike from these walleye.
To do so, we like to use the Williams J50 1/4 oz Spoon . Simply raise your rod and let the lure flutter down to the bottom. Walleye love this lure and soon you will too.
Does the Rapala 06 Clackin’ Rap Lipless Crankbait have want it takes to be one of the best ice fishing lures for walleye? We say yes!
Not only does this lure work great in giving off a lot of vibration and flash to get the walleye’s attention, but this particular crankbait has an addition feature for ice fishing for walleye, a rattle. This lipless crankbait has a steel ball in between two metal discs. As it moves through the water the single steel ball moves giving it a very unique sound that helps to draw walleye from far away.
If you aren’t getting the fish’s attention with other lures, tie this crankbait on and watch this lure bring in the walleye.
One of the best ways to fish is very similar to how you would fish a spoon. Simply lift your rod and let the crankbait flutter down. This allows it to give is that flash as it flutters down, but it also activates the rattle to get the walleye’s attention.
Another favorite lure of ours has a strange name, but let me assure it does catch walleye. It is the Bay De Noc Swedish Pimple Jig. This just looks like another spoon? So why is it called a swedish pimple?
The reason for the name of its looks, but rather where it was initially fished and proved to be a killer bait on the water. It first started in Sweden and proved very effective in catching a number of different species not only ice fishing, but in the summertime as well. Since then it has moved to other countries, where fishermen have found them just as effective.
As you can see, it looks like a spoon and thus you can fish it much like you would a jig or a spoon with an up and down action or a yo-yo retrieve.
To entice the walleye even more you can add some kind of bait to the treble hooks. Some people like to put on entire minnows on the tip while others have just put on a minnow head.
So what can you do when the walleye fishing is slow? Use a Celsius Tungsten Stunner Jig and tip it with live bait such as a minnow. I know this may seem like a simply approach to walleye ice fishing, but sometimes simple works better.
We have found 3 different ways to fish this jig to get results. One of the easiest ways is to fish to deadstick it. Set up your ice fishing tip up so that it is about 12 inches to 18 inches from the bottom depending on how deep of water you are fishing and wait for it to go off.
The next way to fish it is with vertical jigging. Simply by lifting and dropping your rod you can draw attention and generate a bite. We like the Celsius Tungsten Stunner Jig for this particular way of fishing because it reacts a little bit better to the jigging motion giving it more action.
Lastly, this jig combines nicely with any of the other lures previous mentioned. Simply tie this lure to your ice fishing tip up. Next, in another ice fishing hole use any of the lures mentioned earlier that are designed to draw the walleye’s attention you such as the Cracklin Rap. This way if the walleye wants the crankbait they will strike it. If they like the jig they will strike the jig. Sometimes giving the fish more options and allowing them to tell you what they want works best.
So what are the best walleye ice fishing lures?
Well, in this post, we have discussed what we think to be the top 6 best ice fishing lures for walleye. However, it is important to always adapt to what the fish want. Any of these lures can prove to be hot on the coldest of days, but there will be days in which that same lure won’t catch you a fish.
The best thing to do is get out there try what you think will work and always be ready to add to what fish want and how they want it fished.
