Fishing on a paddle board….amazingly cool.
Many people love paddle boards and they love fishing, but few people have actually given much thought to fishing on a paddle board. In this post let’s talk about some reasons why I believe everyone should at least give fishing paddle boards a try.
(Beware after reading this post you may find yourself on board as well…literally.)
New perspective. Many people know that a good pair of polarized sunglasses can help you to see fish better, but would you believe me if I told you that a fishing with a paddle board can help you see fish more fish too?
Don’t believe me? Then give it a try yourself. Having to stand up while paddling gives you a new perspective or a new vantage point and makes it much easier to see fish.
Will you catch more fish with a paddle board? I can’t promise that you will, but being able to see the fish more clearly definitely gives you an extra advantage.
Low cost. A good paddle board can range from $500 – $800 which is a lot of money to pay upfront. However, in the long run, the costs of owning a paddle board are actually much cheaper than owning a boat. Let’s just take a moment and think about all the money you would be saving.
For example, you don’t have to worry about fuel prices or ramp fees. You are not required to carry insurance on your SUP. You don’t have to own a large trailer to haul it around and lastly, you can forget about having to register it.
Did I mention that repairs are not only a lot easier, but cheaper as well? This is especially true if you have an inflatable paddle board. All that is needed is a good repair kit and a little know how.
Access to new waters. Have you ever found yourself driving by a small lake or a pond thinking, “oh if only I could get my boat out on the water”? Now you can! Since paddle boards don’t require a boat launch you can lauch your SUP just about anywhere you would like.
Another thing to consider is that there are many lakes that won’t even allow gas motors to be on the lake. Take for example the state of Wisconsin. Here is a list of all the lakes in the entire state that are “no motor lakes”. Take a moment at look at the list of lakes. If you limit yourself to just having a boat you are missing out on all these good fishing opportunities. On the other hand with a fishing paddle board you can access these lakes with no problems.
Wading. If you would like the idea of jumping in and out of the boat to doing a fishing along the shore you will love fishing with a paddle board.
Let’s say you are in your boat and you found the perfect spot to do some wading. What would you need to do? Stop the boat, anchor it, jump off and go to the spot you would like to fish. Once there you may realize you brought the wrong equipment or you want to change your lure. Now you have to go to back to your boat etc. So much precious fishing time is lost.
On the other hand with a SUP you can just jump off and jump on quite easily. Also as long as you have your leash attached you can wade up and down the shore with all your equipment at your disposal.
Once again as you can see, fishing with a fishing paddle board will give you more access to waters that other fishermen might not even want to bother with.
Environmentally safe. I am a strong advocate of keeping the area we fish clean for future generations. There is no doubt about it, gas motors pollute the air, they pollute the water and they disturb the very waters that we love to fish in. I am not saying we should never use powerboats, jetskis and the like on the water, but we should be smarter about our use.
One of the best ways to keep our lakes, ponds and rivers clean is using less gas motors. Using fishing paddle boards and kayaks is a great place to start and they are more fun too!
Sneak up on fish. There is some debate whether fish are spooked by trolling motors or by boats themselves. Some have even said that fish can become a custom to the vibrations and leave the area when they feel them coming close.
What better way to fish than with a paddle board with no motor, no vibrations and very little sound. Yes, paddle boards are very quiet and allow you to sneak up to fish.
They are fun! Lastly, and maybe even most importantly is the simple fact that fishing on a SUP is fun! It is great way to exercise and spend time enjoying nature. So what are you waiting for, get yourself a fishing paddle board and start fishing today!
