Is an Alabama legal in my state? That is probably the first question that comes to your mind when you think about fishing with the controversial Umbrella Rig.
For that reason, I have done the research for you.
Below you will find a state by state list of the current regulations when it comes to fishing with this lure.
Please keep in mind, that while I try to keep this list up to date, always check the fishing regulation guide for your state before going out on the water.

Is the Alabama Rig legal in……
Alabama
No limitations in AL, use up to 5 hooks no problem.
Arizona
Stay out of trouble by fishing with no more than 2 hooks in AZ.
Arkansas
You can fish with up to 5 hooks in AR.
California
Legal up to 3 hooks in CA.
Colorado
Yes, you can use an A-rig in CO, but only up to 3 hooks. The other two will have to be dummy baits or spinners.
Connecticut
Up to 5 hooks in CT.
Delaware
Limited to 3 hooks in DE.
Florida
There are no limitations in FL, you can use up to 5 hooks.
Georgia
Fish all five hooks in GA.
Hawaii
Limited to a 2 hook setup in HI.
Idaho
Yes, you can use this lure in ID. You are allowed up to 5 hooks per line.
Illinois
Is the Alabama rig legal in Illinois? Yes, but there are some limitations. For example, it is legal on the Mississippi river between Illinois and Missouri, but not on waters between IL and OH. Learn more about what waters the umbrella is legal in this state here.
Indiana
You may use an umbrella rig in IN, but you are limited to 3 hooks.
Iowa
Limited to 2 hooks per line in IA, however a fully equipped Umbrella rig is not recognized as an artificial lure.
Kansas
No problems in KS, but you will have to modify it to only two hooks.
Kentucky
No worries in KY. Fish away with all 5 hooks.
Louisiana
All 5 hooks allowed in LA.
Maine
ILLEGAL – Sorry guys no fishing with the A-rig here.
Maryland
No more than 2 hooks in the state of MD.
Massachusetts
You are limited to a 2 hook setup in MA
Michigan
Fish the many beautiful lakes that MI has to offer, with up to 5 hooks.
Minnesota
Yes, it is legal to use an Alabama rig in MN, but you are limited to one hook. You will have to attach dummy baits or spinners on the other wires. Learn more at their website here.
Mississippi
No limitations in MS, fish up to 5 hooks at a time.
Missouri
There is a 3 hook limit in MO.
Montana
Montana is a tricky one because it is divided into 3 sections, Central, Western and Eastern MT. Western and Central Montana are both limited to 2 hooks. However, you can fish up to 5 hooks in Eastern Montana, download the most recent regulations according to the body of water you will be fishing at their website found here.
Nebraska
If you are fishing ponds in NE you are limited to two hooks. However, if you are fishing in lakes you can use up to 5.
Nevada
Anglers who fish in NV are limited to 2 baited hooks.
New Hampshire
ILLEGAL – Sorry guys, it is not recognized as an artificial lure in NH.
New Jersey
Fish an A-rig with 5 hooks no problems in NJ, EXCEPT the Delaware river. You are limited to just 3.
New Mexico
There are no limitations in NM. Fish an umbrella rig with up to 5 baited hooks.
New York
Yes, this lure is legal in NY. You can fish 5 lures with up to 15 hook points. However, according to their website there may be certain waters that limit the number of hooks. You will need to investigate the particular lake you are fishing to make sure you don’t have any troubles.
North Carolina
There are no umbrella rig limitations in NC. Fish a 5 hook setup.
North Dakota
Only two lures can have hooks according to the ND fishing regulations website.
Ohio
Fish away in the great state of OH. You are allowed to use up to hooks per setup.
Oklahoma
Yes, you can use an Alabama rig in OK, up to a 5 hook setup.
Oregon
Avoid trouble by using only 3 hooks when fishing OR.
Pennsylvania
The Umbrella rig is legal in PA, up to a 5 hook setup.
Rhode Island
Limited to 3 hook setup in RI.
South Carolina
No limitations in SC. Fish your A-rig fully loaded up to hooks.
South Dakota
You are limited to fishing only with 3 baited hooks in SD.
Tennessee
Yes, the umbrella rig is legal in Tennessee, but it does have limitations. 3 hooks per rod is the only limitation to fishing this bait in TN.
Texas
If you fish with less than 5 hooks you will have no problems catching large bass in TX.
Utah

Vermont

Virginia
No limitations in VA, fish up to 5 hooks.
Washington
While it is legal in WA, you are limited to 3 hooks per angler. Download the latest guide here.

It is legal to fish in WI, but you can’t fish with more than 3 hooks or lures per line.
Wyoming
